Perilla leaves

perilla leaves

The leaves are green on top, purple underneath and look a bit like stinging nettles. You can get green and purple varieties which taste like mint with a hint of lemon.

In Vietnamese cuisine the Perilla leaf is used in salads, noodle soups and as a garnish. The Chinese use the herb to stimulate the immune system. Find it in Asian supermarkets or grow from seeds bought online or from larger garden centres.
