Asian basil

Also known as Thai basil

asian thai basil

Narrow green leaves and purple stems with a strong, distinctive liquorice flavour. Native to India and South East Asia, it has an antibacterial quality so the leaves can be rubbed on the skin to relieve itching from insect bites. Get it from Asian supermarkets, or grow your own - the seeds can be found in garden centres.

Alternative: Mediterranean basil.
