For the crumble

  • 125 g plain flour
  • 75 g unsalted butter
  • 75 g caster sugar
  • 50 g rolled oats

For the fruit

  • 750 g bramley apples
  • 2-3 tbsp caster sugar
  • 1 orange, grated rind and juice
  • 2 tsp unsalted butter

As apples are naturally sweet, try adding less sugar to the fruit filling. For more information on healthier eating see


1. Heat the oven to 200C/gas 6.

2. Sieve the flour into a bowl and rub the butter in with your fingertips until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar and the oats.

3. Peel and thickly slice the apples and toss with the sugar and grated orange rind and juice. Transfer the fruit to an ovenproof dish or divide between 4-6 individual ramekins.

4. Cover the fruit with the crumble mixture and dot with butter.

5. Bake for 20-30 minutes until the crumble is golden and crisp. Serve warm with custard or cream.
