For the base

  • 115 g margarine, such as Stork
  • 55 g caster sugar
  • 175 g self-raising flour

For the filling

  • 400 g can sweetened condensed milk
  • 115 g margarine, such as Stork
  • 2 tbsp golden syrup
  • 150 g hazelnuts

For the topping

  • 200 g plain chocolate


1. For the base:preheat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Put the margarine and flour into a large mixing bowl, then rub into a fine crumb consistency before stirring in the sugar.

2. Spoon the mixture into a greased 18 x 28cm tin and press it down over the base of the tin.Bake for 15 20 minutes.

3.For the filling: combine all the ingredients except the hazelnuts and chocolate in a saucepan and simmer for 8-10 minutes, stirring continuously.

4. Spread the filling over the cooked base and leave to cool.

5. Lightly press the hazelnuts into the filling. Break the chocolate into a bowl and melt it slowly over a pan of hot water (or in the microwave on medium power) and quickly pour it over the caramel and nuts.

6. Mark out the portions before the chocolate sets, and leave to cool completely.
